CBD has been in the news regarding a wide range of reported health benefits. Confusion reigns as people are unsure about what it is, whether it causes the high associated with Marijuana and if it's legal as a result. I will endeavour to unravel the confusion and leave you in no doubt that the products on offer here are legal, safe, will not cause you to get "high" or test positive in a drugs test, and as the highest quality hemp-derived products on the market are effective and reliable.

In 1992, when scientists started investigating the beneficial effects of THC and CBD, they discovered a new biochemical communication system in the body — now called the endocannabinoid system. We are still discovering new things about this body system but it’s believed to be one of the most important physiological systems involved in maintaining the health of the body. It plays a role in maintaining homeostasis, ensuring that the body has a stable and well-functioning internal environment.

The system is made up of endocannabinoid receptors that respond to cannabinoid compounds found in the cannabis plant species and a number of other plants. These receptors are found throughout the brain and body. Of the 100+ cannabinoids that have been identified in the cannabis species, CBD and THC have been studied the most extensively for their role in the endocannabinoid system.

Researchers have identified two major types of cannabinoid receptors — CB1 and CB2. Additional receptors for cannabinoids exist but we currently know little about them at present. CB1 receptors are found in the brain and central nervous system, and CB2 receptors are found in our immune cells. In fact, recent discoveries suggest that more than half of all the receptors in the brain are cannabinoid receptors which is why CBD has been found to help with brain conditions such as epilepsy.

We have what’s called “endogenous cannabinoids,” which are neurotransmitters, or chemical messengers, that bind to cannabinoid receptors. But compounds found in cannabis, like THC, also bind to cannabinoid receptors, mimicking the effects of messengers found within the human body. Receptors react to cannabis compounds and produce a specific effect, which can benefit many body parts and bodily processes.

CBD doesn’t act as a messenger for CB1 or CB2 as THC does, but it does modulate several non-cannabinoid receptors, including serotonin and TRPV1, which can influence pain perception. It also may activate receptors associated with cancer, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

So what happens when the endocannabinoid system becomes underactive or overactive? The body will begin to malfunction and can no longer remain in a homeostatic state. This is being referred to as “clinical endocannabinoid deficiency,” and it may lead to health problems like chronic pain, fatigue, inflammation, arthritis, autoimmune disease and mood disorders.
